Become a Member or Volunteer

The Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum invites your  support .

Individuals and organizations are invited to become involved in preserving Palmerston’s proud past as a railway community.  The restoration of the station and railyard by a dedicated group of volunteers, with local support, is a continuing project which began in 1999 with the restoration of the station.   Future projects, as funds and resources become available, include the acquisition of rolling stock, railway memorabilia, resources for genealogy research and a future cross-generation education centre.

 How Do We Operate?

Operating and restoration resources/funds for the museum are derived from a variety of sources.  Please consider becoming involved in any of the following areas.

  • Volunteers.  Dedicated volunteers are essential to the operations of the Palmerston Railway Museum.  The Association welcomes participants who can help with building and renovation projects, and with a variety of special projects.  Volunteers with expertise in planning and presenting social and fund-raising events are also needed.
  • Visitors and Tours.  The Museum is operated by volunteers, with a summer student funded by Services Canada.  The Museum is open daily, Wednesday through Sunday, during July and August and at other times by appointment or by chance.  Individual admission to the Station is by donation; group tours are charged a minimal fee.  Contact details are on our website.
  • Association Memberships.  Annual memberships in the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum Association are $10; donations of  $25.00 or more will receive tax receipts.  Members are kept up-to-date at regular monthly meetings, and are eligible to stand for election to office and to vote at the Annual General Meeting held early in the calendar year.  A membership form is available on our website.
  •   Donations.   Donations of funds may be directed to operating expenses or to specific projects.  Donations of Grand Trunk/CNR railway and community memorabilia are welcome, and donors will be recognized.  Donations of $25or greater will receive tax receipts.
  • Local Contributions.  Several community organizations have been generous supporters of the museum through donations of funds, materials and expertise.  The Palmerston Lions Club has funded a handcar storage shed and is currently developing the Lions Heritage Park at the Main Street entrance to the area.  Local residents have donated items of railway and community interest, and displays on the second floor of the Museum have been contributed by local sports and youth organizations.  Individuals and service organizations have participated in the laying of track, roofing and painting of the baggage building and renovations and updating within the Station.
  •    Special Events.    The Association has sponsored several fund-raising events – Strawberry Socials in June, and a Christmas Open House and Silent Auction in late fall.  Individual and community organizations donated prizes and items for auction.  Future projects will be undertaken as volunteers are available.
  • Granting Organizations.  The Museum applies for funding grants for both operating expenses and special projects.  An application to Service Canada has been approved annually for a student employee for July and August The provincial government  has approved grants for the bridge and the soil  over the past two years ..
  • Special projects . Our next project is this caboose which is at the station waiting for restoration to begin. We our asking for support  from the community .AS

Can you help us?  For more information, email palmrailroad@wightman.ca or call 519-343-4014.or 519-343-3435.

With your help, we can continue to celebrate and preserve Palmerston’s railway heritage.

Caboose

If there is anyone out there with information as to the history of this car please let us know . We are looking for support in the form of volunteers and money . As  stated  above we have taken a hit on the revenue side but our goal of preserving  railway heritage and displaying it in an educational setting continues. If anyone out there knows about reasonably priced wheels for a 40 foot caboose, please get in touch.
